Oil ended October at its highest level since late April. Brent crude settled at $113.43 a barrel and WTI at $104.12 on October 30, FinanceFeeds reported. Here is how that reaches your budget.

The direct effect: fuel

Gasoline and diesel are made from crude oil, so higher oil prices raise pump prices, usually within days to weeks. Crude is only one part of the price, which also includes refining, distribution and taxes, so pump prices do not move one for one.

The indirect effects

  • Food: farming and trucking both run on diesel, so food costs rise with a delay.
  • Shipping and goods: transport costs get passed on in the price of products.
  • Travel: airlines often add fuel surcharges.
  • Heating and electricity: where oil or gas set prices, bills can climb.

How it feeds inflation

When fuel and transport cost more, overall prices rise. Reuters, via MarketScreener, said faster inflation came as consumers paid more for gasoline and other goods. That adds pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates; see our PCE inflation report.

Why oil is high right now

The main driver is the Strait of Hormuz, a shipping lane through which a large share of the world's oil flows. Reports of a tanker attack and mine claims pushed prices up on October 30. Our oil report has the details.

How to cope

  1. Cut fuel use where easy. Combine trips, keep tires properly inflated and avoid idling.
  2. Compare prices. Apps can show cheaper stations nearby.
  3. Plan big trips early, since airfares can rise with fuel costs.
  4. Review your budget for fuel, groceries and utilities, and set aside a buffer.
  5. Check your savings rate. If inflation stays high, a higher-yield account protects more of your money.
